The Oldham Academy North has launched an after school gardening club called Home Grown TOAN, the club will take place every Thursday until 4pm.
The purpose of Home Gown TOAN is to encourage students to make a connection to the food they eat by growing produce themselves within the grounds of the academy. Once the produce is ready for harvest it will be showcased as part of the daily menu at TOANY’s. In addition to this, the gardening club is currently planting an edible hedgerow around the grounds and in a couple of years we will be harvesting produce such as Hazelnuts, Sloe Berries, Elderflowers, Elderberries, Crab apples and Dog Rose hips. The hedgerow will also provide a valuable habitat for wildlife by re wilding small areas of the grounds.
If your child would like to take part in the gardening club they will need to come and see the following staff members, by Miss Broadhurst, Mrs Godwin, Mr Nield and Miss Mistry. Your child will need to make sure that they bring some warm clothing to school on a Thursday, the academy will provide wellies and waterproofs if needed.
