The Futures Programme
The Futures Programme is a unique curriculum designed exclusively for students at The Oldham Academy North. Through years 7 to 11, students will study and take part in school visits, courses, events and activities alongside their timetabled lessons and in form time, designed to increase the future prospects of our students. By completing The Futures Programme, students will graduate from the academy with life and employability skills, making them well-rounded job candidates and therefore giving them an advantage over other students their age.
Since September students have been taking part in many different activities combining career awareness, employability skills and soft skills both internally and externally. Each year group has already completed around 30% of their programme, and we are on track for every year group completing 100% of their programme by July; a fantastic achievement.
Year 10 Young Enterprise
Following the success of last year's Young Enterprise team 'Initial', winners of the Oldham Area Final and also the Regional Barclays Technology Award in June, this year we have continued with the highly successful Young Enterprise Company Programme with the support of Oldham Business Leadership Group. Taking on the mantle is a new team of twelve Year 10 students with a company called 'Glassique'.
Glassique create unique, hand-painted and personalised wine glasses, candle holders and mason jars. Inspired by design influences from their heritage such as Mehndi, they combine their excellent art and design skills with their skills in henna art to create beautiful, original products which are proving to be very popular amongst staff and students. Their products can be customised to the specification of the consumer, making them bespoke and therefore perfect gift ideas! With a product line ranging from £3 to £8, they are targeting the mass market with a focus on women.
The team are already well on their way with their business and brand, and are already well advanced of their peers from other Young Enterprise institutions across Oldham and the North West. They are highly ambitious and have the goals set by Initial in sight, hoping to equal or even better their success in 2016!

Year 9 Complete basic life saving skills
As part of the Year 9 futures program, all year 9 students undergo First Aid training. The training lasts for six hours and we follow the Oldham Heart Start program which is funded by the British Heart Foundation. This is the second year it has been run in the Academy.
The students learn life saving skills, the program covers, the recovery position, CPR and how to use a defibrillator, they learn how to help someone who is choking and what to do if they suspect a heart attack.
The students have enjoyed the course and feel confident enough to help somebody if needed.
Year 7 Outward bounds
Our pilot year group, started the year building up their communication soft skills, working on interview techniques and learning how to present themselves and communicate with prospective employers and colleagues. Many of the Year 7 students have also visited Castleshaw, an outdoor learning centre where they have developed outdoor survival skills and team building. The Year 7 students had a fantastic day at Castleshaw and learnt a lot of new skills whilst having fun and building relationships with their friends, form teacher and head of year.
